Socialism refers to the goal of a socio-economic system in which property and the distribution of wealth are subject to control by the community.[1] As an economic system, socialism is often characterized by collective ownership of the means of production. Since the distribution of wealth is controlled as a whole, and not individually, socialism has been identified with communism. In a practical ideology, members of the community would contribute as much as reasonably possible, yet they would be capable of consuming as much as reasonably necessary.

The modern socialist movement largely originated in the late-19th century working class movement. During this period, the term "socialism" was first used by European social critics, who spoke against capitalism and private property. Karl Marx, who helped establish and define the modern socialist movement, wrote that socialism would be the socioeconomic system that arises after the proletarian revolution.[2]

Hillary Clinton April 2008 I was campaigning in Ohio a few weeks ago, and I was in southern Ohio down on the Ohio River.  It's part of Appalachia. It was a poor part of the state.  I was meeting with a group of people in a mobile home.  And a deputy sheriff told me about a young woman from that town who had worked at the local pizza parlor.  She worked for minimum wage. She sure didn't have health insurance.  She got pregnant.  She started having trouble.  She went to the nearest hospital.  There wasn't one in her county.  And the hospital, whom I do not blame, said, "We can't take any more charity care, particularly from out of the county, so before we examine you, we've got to have a hundred dollars."  Well, you might as well have asked this young woman for a million dollars.  She went back home.
The family of this woman, Trina Bechtel, is outraged that Mrs. Clinton is lying about them.  They're not poor, they did have health insurance, and they are fed up, as is the hospital

Hillary Clinton Number one: "We are going to take things away from you on behalf of the common good." Number two: "It's time for a new beginning, for an end to government of the few, by the few, for the few, and to replace it with shared responsibility for shared prosperity."  Number three: "We can't just let business as usual go on, and that means something has to be taken away from some people." Number four: "We have to build a political consensus and that requires people to give up a little bit of their own turf in order to create this common ground."  Number five:  "I certainly think the free market has failed."  Number six: "I think it's time to send a clear message to what has become the most profitable sector in the entire economy, that they are being watched."  Number seven:  "What I want to do is take those profits and apply them to alternative energy." None of those seven things were said by Karl Marx or Frederick Engels.  These were all stated by Hillary Clinton: June 29th of '04, May 29th of '07, June 4th of '07, June 4th of 2007, June 4th of '07, and September 2nd of '05
